Press release

International House, Davis, which has been a community based center of activity for visitors and residents for 27 years, has a new executive director. She is Elisabeth Sherwin, formerly a long-time employee at The Davis Enterprise.

Sherwin has lived and studied in both England and Spain and has been a regular visitor to Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia. She has made several trips to southern India representing Sahaya International, a local non-profit dedicated to the welfare of women and children.

Sherwin also served on the International House Davis board of directors for the past three years.

"International House is a gem in a city full of interesting organizations," said Sherwin. "I am lucky to be able to continue working with great people in the community and hope to collaborate with many other groups on important issues."

She began her new job on April 1, 2008, and can be reached at dir at internationalhousedavis.org

Additionally, she said the annual fundraising auction for International House, Davis, which was held on March 1, raised nearly $8,000.

"Thanks go to all our members and supporters," said Shirley German, president of the IHD board of directors. "We had a great time and raised money for our international programs and events, which we warmly invite members of the community to attend."

German also thanked the board of directors, which consists of Sean Duggan, Eileen Leung, Calvin Handy, Bill Cavins, Jean Xavier Guinard, Hamza El-Nakhal, Frederick Becker, Koen Van Rompay, Tsui Chang, Charles Lacy, Paul Marcotte, Michelle Molko, Frank Roe, Howard Schutz, and Sharon Shoemaker.

German, who will step down as president in June, reflected on the past year at International House.

"We have had some marvelous successes with the Children's international Storytelling program, our annual conference on Brazil, our language classes, lectures, our summer camp for kids, and our continuing monthly art shows and our international film series. Residents know that our rooms are available to rent for international events or private parties," added German.

German also described changes being made at I-House.

"We want to thank Elaine Barratt for her many years of service running the International Parent Child Learning Center," said German. "While IHD can no longer support the preschool financially, we very much hope another sponsor can be found for the PCLC."

The IHD board of directors voted a year ago to discontinue financial support of the International Parent Child Learning Center, which is housed at St. Martin's Church in Davis.
