a rolling stone gathers no mossJack May of DCN Marketing

Jack May took over the reins of the DCN Marketing Committee as its chairperson at the end of 1994. Under his direction DCN Marketing launched the "Exclamation Point" ad campaign (designed by Jeff March of Editpros). This campaign included rotating ads in the Davis Enterprise, creation of a mailer-handout piece (used also as a Davis Enterprise insert piece), and lastly ads in the Davis Food Coop Newsletter.

Jack was good at motivating and at delegating. Marketing moved on to have a booth at Picnic Day '95 and at Whole Earth Festivals '95 and '96. There were numerous booth presences at the Davis Farmer's Market and the Davis Food Coop.

One of the most successful events that Jack brought together was the DCN Open Houses held at the City of Davis Computer Lab. The prelude to this was a mailer campaign incorporating once again the "exclamation point" motif. The "exclamation point" lived on as an element in the "big brochure," which saw the light of day after 8 months of work and infusion of new blood into the Marketing Committee.

At the time of his death, Jack was shifting the DCN Marketing Committee to an educational role. The idea of having "dog and pony" shows at Davis public schools was refined into educating parents and teachers as to the usefulness of list serves. These mailing lists can supply the lunch menus, homework assignments and information about school events. Jack saw this as a resouce that could be developed and maintained by interested parents, teachers, and even students. This was Jack May's future direction for the DCN Marketing Committee.

Because of Jack's "rock n' roll" background and his constant push for continual momentum within the Marketing Committee, the unofficial motto of the Marketing Committee was "DCN Marketing is on the move and gathers no moss..." Jack was not afraid of controversy or challenging views within DCN and was DCN Marketing's "Fearless Leader."

Death is that stage where one exists only in the memories of others. That is why it is not an end point for someone like Jack M. May, who has touched so many with his life. Davis Community Network is the sum of all its parts and Jack's influence will continue to be a part of DCN.

And, Jack May will continue to live on the Net. Jack named his personal website server "lazarus-2," not without a reason.
